Lease math, explained in plain English
Car leases are built on a few numbers that dealers do not always show clearly: the adjusted capitalized cost, the residual value, the money factor and the term. Once you know them, you can check any quote in a minute.
- Car lease calculator — the full monthly payment, split into depreciation, rent charge and tax.
- Money factor to APR — convert the lease rate and see if it was marked up.
- Lease buyout calculator — what it costs to keep your car, and whether you have equity.
- Lease vs buy calculator — compare both options over the same period.
Why trust these calculators?
They use the standard formulas from lease contracts, shown on every page with a worked example so you can verify them by hand. They are independent: we do not sell cars, leases or loans. Results are estimates; your contract is the final word.
Frequently asked questions
What is a money factor?
It is the interest rate on a lease written as a decimal. Multiply it by 2400 to get the approximate APR.
What is a residual value?
The value the lender expects the car to have at the end of the lease, set as a percentage of MSRP. It is also your buyout price.
