How the lease mileage calculator works
Every lease includes a mileage allowance, usually 10,000, 12,000 or 15,000 miles per year. Go over it and you pay an excess mileage charge for every extra mile when you return the car. This calculator projects your final mileage from your current pace:
Example
You have a 36-month lease with 12,000 miles a year (36,000 in total). After 18 months you have driven 20,000 miles. At that pace you will reach about 40,000 miles — 4,000 over. At $0.25 per mile that is about $1,000. To stay within the limit you would need to drive about 889 miles a month from now on.
How to avoid excess mileage charges
- Slow down early. The calculator shows the monthly miles you can still drive.
- Buy extra miles. Some lenders let you buy miles mid-lease, often cheaper than the end-of-lease rate.
- Buy the car. If you keep the car, mileage charges do not apply. Check the lease buyout calculator.
- Trade early. If the car has equity, a dealer may pay off the lease and absorb the miles.
The projection assumes you keep driving at the same pace. Seasonal trips or a job change will change the result, so check again every few months.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to go over miles on a lease?
Usually $0.15 to $0.30 per mile, as stated in your contract. 3,000 extra miles at $0.25 costs $750.
How do I calculate my lease miles?
Multiply the yearly allowance by the number of years. A 36-month lease with 12,000 miles a year allows 36,000 miles.
Can I buy extra miles during my lease?
Many lenders allow it, often at a lower price per mile than the end-of-lease charge. Ask your leasing company.
Do I pay excess mileage if I buy the car?
No. Mileage charges only apply when you return the car. If you buy it out, the miles do not matter.
Do I get money back for unused miles?
Most US leases do not refund unused miles. Some lenders apply them as a credit toward your next lease.
